Workshop on FAO Pesticide Registration Toolkit

The CEO Dr. Viliami Toalei Manu opened a one-week workshop  from  7th – 11th August 2017 on Pesticide Registration Toolkit.

The facilitator of this workshop  was Ms. Renuma Kumar from SPC ,  Plant Health Technical Assistant from Land Resources Division.  These were the activities that workshop covered;

  • Briefing pesticide staffs on the PSMS/AIMMS database, FAO Pesticide Registration Toolkit;
  • Assisting and training them in populating the Tonga pesticide file;
  • Training staffs on the PSMS/AIMMS database, its operation and functions and creating their log in credentials;
  • Uploading the Tonga Pesticide file up into the PSMS platform;
  • Providing training on the FAO Pesticide Registration Toolkit, its application and operation and how they could use it for evaluation and authorization of pesticides imported in Tonga. 

Similar training has been conducted in Samoa and Cook Islands. Tonga is the fourth country in the Pacific to have its pesticide file being completed for upload into the PSMS.   The database was created by FAO under the Capacity Building related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements in ACP Countries – Phase 2 (MEAs 2) , with series of workshop conducted to introduce everyone to the system.

This workshop  benefits all MAFF staff  who participated, they would be able to modify the current pesticide registration system and will be able to record and monitor pesticides imported and used in the country more effectively and efficiently.
